Transoesophageal Echocardiography (TOE) in London and Essex

Why might I need a TOE?

A TOE is recommended when more precise imaging is required, including:

  • Assessment of heart valve disease

  • Evaluation prior to certain procedures or heart operations

  • Assessing for holes in the heart, like a Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO)

  • Further clarification of findings seen on a standard echocardiogram

What does the test involve?

The procedure is usually performed with local anaesthetic spray to the throat and light sedation to ensure comfort. The probe is gently passed into the oesophagus, where detailed images of the heart are obtained.

Specialist care and reassurance

TOE is a safe and well-established procedure performed by Dr Jones. You will be closely monitored throughout, and recovery is typically quick.

Transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) is a specialised form of heart ultrasound that provides highly detailed images of the heart from within the oesophagus (food pipe).

What is a TOE?

Unlike a standard echocardiogram performed on the chest, TOE involves passing a small ultrasound probe into the oesophagus. This allows much clearer and more detailed views of the heart, particularly the valves and certain internal structures.
