About Dr Richard Jones, BSc (Hons), MBChB, MRCP (UK), PhD

Consultant Cardiologist

I'm a Consultant Cardiologist based in Essex and London, and Cardiac Imaging Lead at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust. My focus is on getting patients a fast, accurate diagnosis - usually through advanced cardiac imaging - so that treatment decisions can be made with confidence, not guesswork.

My training

I graduated in Medicine (MBChB) at the University of Bristol, before working in Bristol, Cambridge, London and Sydney. I subsequently became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP UK), and successfully applied for a National Training Number in Cardiology in the East of England deanery. During my training, I completed a prestigious Clinical Research Training Fellowship at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London, attaining a PhD focused on mitochondrial function in ischaemic heart disease and the prediction of sudden cardiac death. During this PhD, I trained in Cardiac MRI at the world-renowned Royal Brompton Hospital, achieving Level 3 accreditation from the European Society of Cardiovascular Imaging.

I completed my specialist cardiac imaging training at the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre, achieving full accreditation from the British Society of Echocardiography in both Transthoracic and Transoesophageal Echocardiography.

My experience in advanced cardiac imaging allows me to lead each patient’s imaging directly, rather than referring out - echocardiography, stress echocardiography, cardiac MRI, and CT coronary angiography are integrated into the same pathway wherever possible.

Recognition

In 2021, I was awarded a Young Investigator Award at the 2021 European Society of Cardiology Congress - a distinction given to a small number of cardiologists each year at Europe's largest cardiology conference. research.

I have co-authored numerous high‑impact publications in leading journals, including the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Circulation, Nature Cardiovascular Medicine, European Journal of Heart Failure, JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging, and the Journal of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance. A full list of my publications can be found on Google Scholar and ResearchGate.

My approach to your care

I believe good cardiology starts with listening properly and reaching the right diagnosis quickly. Wherever it's clinically appropriate, I use advanced imaging - echocardiography, cardiac MRI, and CT coronary angiography - alongside on-site ECG, blood tests, and rhythm monitoring, so many patients leave their first consultation with a clear diagnosis and treatment plan, rather than a string of further referrals.

My research background means I bring an evidence-led approach to every case, particularly when assessing complex or high-risk patients - for example, valve disease in the context of other comorbidities, where getting the full clinical picture matters most.

Private Heart Specialist

I provide expert assessment and management of a wide range of cardiovascular symptoms. I see patients in both London and Essex clinics, offering timely and personalised care.

I regularly assess patients presenting with:

In addition, I manage patients with established or complex cardiovascular conditions, including:

  • Coronary artery disease (including angina)

  • Heart valve disease

  • Heart rhythm disorders (arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation)

  • Heart failure

I provide a comprehensive, consultant-led approach, ensuring continuity of care from initial consultation through to diagnosis and ongoing management.

With expertise in advanced non-invasive cardiac imaging, I am able to oversee all aspects of a patient’s diagnostic pathway, often avoiding the need for multiple specialist referrals. This allows for a more streamlined, efficient, and reassuring patient experience.
