Dr Richard Jones, Consultant Cardiologist
Dr Richard Jones is a Consultant Cardiologist and Cardiac Imaging Lead at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, and a Senior Research Fellow at Anglia Ruskin University. His clinical practice spans the full breadth of general cardiology, with specialist expertise in advanced cardiac imaging.
He holds full accreditation from the British Society of Echocardiography in both Transthoracic and Transoesophageal Echocardiography, and Level 3 accreditation in Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance from the European Society of Cardiovascular Imaging.
Dr Jones completed his PhD at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London. His research focused on mitochondrial function in ischaemic heart disease, and the role of cardiac MRI in sudden cardiac death prediction. His work in this field earned him a prestigious Young Investigator Award at the 2021 European Society of Cardiology Congress. He remains actively involved in research, and is the Chief Investigator of the Essex Heart Registry.
He has co-authored numerous high‑impact publications in leading journals, including the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Circulation, Nature Cardiovascular Medicine, European Journal of Heart Failure, JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging, and the Journal of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance. Deeply committed to medical education and training, Dr Jones currently serves as the Cardiology Unit Training Director at the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre, where he plays a key role in developing the next generation of doctors.
