What is an Echocardiogram?
A transthoracic echocardiogram, or TTE, is an ultrasound scan of your heart. It's one of the most useful tests in cardiology because it lets me see your heart working in real time - its chambers, valves, and pumping function - without any radiation or discomfort.
Why I use it
I use TTE to assess breathlessness, murmurs, palpitations, high blood pressure, and suspected valve disease. It's often the first imaging test I request because it answers so many questions at once: how well your heart muscle is pumping, whether a valve is leaking or narrowed, and whether there are any structural abnormalities.
What to expect
The scan takes around 30–45 minutes. You'll lie on your side while a probe is moved across your chest, using gel to get a clear ultrasound picture. It's painless and has no after-effects - you can drive and return to normal activity straight away.

I review the images personally soon after appointment, so you will have a clear explanation of what we've found and what happens next.
FAQ
Is a TTE the same as an ECG?
No. An ECG records your heart's electrical rhythm from stickers on your skin; a TTE is an ultrasound image of your heart's structure and pumping function. I often use both together.
Do I need to prepare for a TTE?
No special preparation is needed. You can eat, drink, and take your usual medications beforehand.
Is the scan safe?
Yes. TTE uses sound waves, not radiation, and has no known risks.
