Private Stress Echocardiogram in Essex and London

What is Stress echocardiography ?

A stress echocardiogram combines a standard heart ultrasound with controlled exercise (or a medication that mimics exercise), so I can see how your heart performs under exertion rather than just at rest. This is often the most useful test when your symptoms - chest pain, breathlessness - only happen on exertion.

Why I use it

Some heart problems, particularly narrowings in the coronary arteries or certain valve conditions, only reveal themselves when the heart is working hard. A resting scan can look entirely normal in these cases. Stress echo lets me directly compare your heart's function before and immediately after exertion.

What to expect

You'll walk on a treadmill or cycle on a stationary bike, with your heart rate and blood pressure monitored throughout. I take ultrasound images just before you finish and immediately afterwards, while your heart is still working hard. If exercise isn't suitable for you, we can use a medication (dobutamine) to safely achieve the same effect.

Getting your results

I discuss the findings with you straight after the scan, so you understand what's been seen and what it means for your treatment.

FAQ

Is a stress echo safe?

Yes, it's performed under continuous monitoring, and I'm trained to manage any response to exercise or medication.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothing and trainers suitable for walking or light exercise.

How is this different from a standard treadmill (ECG) stress test?

A stress echo adds direct heart imaging to the exercise test, giving more detailed information about heart muscle and valve function than ECG changes alone.

Will I need to stop any medications beforehand?

Sometimes, depending on what we're assessing - I'll confirm this with you in advance of your appointment.
